Exodus 33 details God's decision not to travel with the Israelites directly after the golden calf incident, the people's lament, and Moses's deep intercession for a renewed relationship with God, culminating in a profound encounter with His glory.
The Journey Without God
After the golden calf incident, God gives a sobering command to Moses.
-God's Command: The LORD tells Moses to lead the people to the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. However, God states, "I will not go up among you, for you are a stiff-necked people, lest I consume you on the way." He promises to send an angel ahead of them to drive out the inhabitants of the land, but He Himself will not be in their midst.
-The People's Reaction: Upon hearing this news, the people mourn and remove their ornaments as a sign of their grief.
The Tent of Meeting and Moses's Intercession
In response to God's command, Moses moves the Tent of Meeting outside the camp.
-The Tent of Meeting: Moses sets up the Tent of Meeting a distance away from the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise and stand at their tent doors, watching him. This was a clear act of separation, but also a symbol of hope.
- The Cloud Pillar: Whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance. This visual sign of God's presence filled the people with hope, and they would all bow down at their tent doors.
-Moses's Plea: Moses spoke with God "face to face, as a man speaks to his friend." Moses pleads with God to reverse His decision. He argues, "If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here." Moses knows that without God's presence, the Israelites are just like any other nation. He asks, "How shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight... unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people, from every other people on the face of the earth."
A Glimpse of God's Glory
God responds favorably to Moses's heartfelt plea.
- God's Promise: The LORD says, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." This is a profound moment of reconciliation.
- Moses's Bold Request: Moses then makes a stunning request: "Please show me your glory."
-The Theophany: God agrees to this request but with a limitation. He says, "You cannot see my face, for no man shall see me and live." God promises to make all His goodness pass before Moses. He then instructs Moses to stand on a rock. When His glory passes by, He will put Moses in the cleft of the rock and cover him with His hand until He has passed by. God says, "I will proclaim before you my name, 'The LORD.'" Finally, He will take away His hand, and Moses will see His back, but His face will not be seen. This intimate yet limited encounter provides a powerful vision of God's nature while preserving the holiness and majesty of His full glory.
